The road through Mississippi took me through Oxford and
Tupelo,
home towns to two of America's famous artists.
William Faulkner's house in Oxford was
hard to find. I asked three residents who didn't have a clue.
Finally, a literate cop told me how to find it.
I got there about 9 am, and the house didn't open
until 10. I could walk around the grounds, though, which were quite
lovely. I'm going back, now that I know where it is.
Big signs on the highway made Elvis's
birthplace in Tupelo a lot easier to find. It's down this street,
where the white van is parked.
It's quite different from the Faulkner estate.
The house was built by his father. They left the house when Elvis
was about 3, but continued to live in Tupelo until he was 13.
