Lake Huron – Exploring the Michigan Thumb

I arrived at this park on the last Wednesday in June and it was nearly empty. My original plan was to stay for five nights, then move on up the Thumb. However I failed to consider that would mean finding another campground during the Independence Day holiday. I quickly found out that every Michigander with a camper planned to spend the Fourth using it, and had made reservations two months earlier.

Southern Michigan – Detroit to Toledo

It took 55 years, but I finally made it to Michigan.

I’ve visited all the neighboring states, but Michigan sort of hides out among the Great Lakes; it’s not on the way to anywhere, except perhaps Canada. Also, as soon as you cross the border from Indiana a camper is presented with a bit of a problem. Detroit looms at the door to the state like Mr. T in his ill-tempered bouncer days. How would I deal with the challenge of camping in a densely populated, high crime metropolitan area?

Northern Indiana – Mid-America Windmill Museum

As you can see, I was the only visitor on that cloudy afternoon (at first).

When I left the Cord museum in Auburn Indiana, it was to hunt down another sort of spinning circle. I had learned there was a windmill museum just a bit up the rural route in Kendallville, and I just had to check it out.
